The Idoma people are one of the many ethnic groups in Nigeria, with a population of over one million people. They are known for their rich cultural heritage and contributions to the development of the country. Despite their strengths and potential, the Idoma people face numerous challenges that require strong leadership to overcome. In order to reach their ‘promised land’, the Idoma people have to unearth their ‘Moses’ and ‘Joshua’.
Firstly, strong leaders can help to improve the economic development of the Idoma people. The lack of basic infrastructure and investment in the region has hindered economic growth, resulting in high levels of poverty, unemployment, and the migration of young talents from Idomaland. Strong leaders can promote policies that encourage investment in the region, such as promoting the economic potential of Idomaland to the outside world. This can be done by working with local communities to identify areas of economic potential and develop strategies to harness them, e.g. Owukpa salt mines, Otukpo International Carnival, Orokam palm wine markets, etc.
This unhappy state of affairs is compounded by a background of political & security challenges, highlighted by the Fulani herdsmen invasion. It is clear that any path to political power to change this desperate situation must come from economic empowerment. This is because the Idoma people do not as yet possess the population numbers to effectively challenge their Tiv counterparts for political leadership. The fact that no Idoma person has risen to the position of governor of Benue State since its creation is a testament to current reality.
Again, strong leaders can help to improve social development in the region. The Idoma people face numerous social challenges, including high levels of illiteracy, inadequate healthcare facilities, and a lack of access to basic amenities. Effective leaders can work with local communities to identify and prioritize these challenges and develop policies and programs that can attract the attention of government & non-governmental organizations (NGOs). This can include building schools and healthcare centres, providing training and education, and improving access to clean water and electricity. Strong leaders can help to promote social development in the region and improve the quality of life for the Idoma people.
Furthermore, strong leaders can help to promote unity and peaceful coexistence among the Idoma people. The region has experienced numerous conflicts and disputes, often fuelled by ethnic and political differences. Effective leaders can work to bridge these divides and promote a sense of common identity and purpose. They can foster a culture of tolerance and respect for diversity, promote dialogue and reconciliation, and work to address the root causes of conflicts. Through strong leadership, the Idoma people can overcome their differences and work together towards a common vision.
Lastly, strong leaders can help to promote cultural preservation and heritage. The Idoma people have a rich cultural heritage that is at risk of being eroded by modernization and globalization. Effective leaders can work to promote and preserve this cultural heritage, by promoting traditional arts, crafts, and music, preserving cultural artefacts, and supporting cultural festivals and events. This can help to promote a sense of pride and identity among the Idoma people and help to preserve their unique cultural heritage.
In conclusion, the Idoma people require strong leaders to overcome the numerous challenges they face. Strong leaders can help to improve economic development, promote social development, foster unity and peaceful coexistence, and promote cultural preservation and heritage. It is therefore important for the Idoma people to identify and support strong leaders who can help to address these challenges and work towards a better future. Through effective leadership, the Idoma people can achieve their full potential and contribute to the development of Nigeria as a whole.
