The United Kingdom Is a diverse society that is made up of different racial and religious communities. It is therefore crucial to foster connections and understanding between different communities to promote social cohesion, mutual respect, cultural exchange, social integration, peaceful coexistence, innovation, and economic development.Â
In particular, understanding different cultures, traditions, and values promotes mutual respect. When communities engage with one another, they gain insights into the unique experiences, histories, and challenges faced by each group. This understanding paves the way for empathy, appreciation, and acceptance, creating a foundation for respectful interactions and collaboration.
One such community that brings its vibrant culture to the UK is the Idoma people. Originating from the middle belt of Nigeria, they have a unique set of traditions, language, and customs. In the UK, the Idoma community has grown, with a significant population spread across various regions. They have made notable contributions in areas such as academia, arts, and business, enriching the cultural landscape of their adopted home.
Misunderstandings and conflicts often arise due to a lack of understanding between different communities. In the past, the UK had witnessed violent clashes between black vs white and Hindu vs Muslim communities. By fostering connections and promoting understanding, we can reduce the potential for friction and enhance peaceful coexistence. When people have the opportunity to learn about and engage with one another, they are less likely to perpetuate stereotypes or harbour prejudices, leading to a more harmonious and tolerant society.
Collaboration and diversity are key drivers of innovation and creativity. When individuals from different communities come together, they bring unique perspectives, knowledge, and skills. The exchange of ideas and experiences fosters creativity, leading to innovative solutions to shared challenges. By building bridges, we unlock the full potential of collective intelligence, promoting progress and development.
What are the Strategies for Building Bridges? The first useful strategy is to overcome language barriers by promoting language classes, and cultural exchange programs, which can be highly effective. By offering opportunities for both Idoma and other community members to learn each other’s languages, barriers can be broken down, fostering better understanding and communication. Facilitating language interpretation services, e.g. NHS, can help.
Secondly, organizing cultural festivals and events that showcase the Idoma heritage can promote cultural awareness and appreciation. Organizations such as IDUUK have previously invited members of other Nigerian communities to their annual Dinner events, thereby providing a platform for Idoma and other community members to learn from each other while celebrating diversity and building mutual respect. Cultural awareness campaigns and workshops can further enhance understanding and break down stereotypes.Â
Thirdly, collaborating with local organizations and community centres is essential in creating a supportive environment for the Idoma community. Encouraging participation in local activities and initiatives nurtures a sense of belonging and strengthens community bonds. By serving as local volunteers in the NHS, Idoma members have helped in better delivering COVID vaccinations to ethnic minorities.
Lastly, the UK supports many educational initiatives and scholarships targeted at ethnic minorities that can empower the Idoma community and open doors to a brighter future. There are also Mentorship programs and career guidance tailored to their needs that can help overcome employment challenges, enabling Idoma individuals to thrive professionally. By participating in joint initiatives, such as community gatherings and social events, both Idoma and other community members can forge meaningful connections.
Success stories of individuals who have bridged the gap between the Idoma community and other communities need to be highlighted to serve as inspiration and motivation for others. These stories can demonstrate the positive impact that building bridges can have on society as a whole, fostering unity, understanding, and acceptance.
